Ideas Versus Insight

Ideas are cheap. And by this, I don’t mean that ideas are worthless. They’re just not hard to obtain. From an economic standpoint, there is always a surplus of ideas. Luckily, they’re in high demand.

Original thought is such an alien concept, even though sometimes we like to think our ideas are the original ones. And who knows—maybe sometimes they are.

The important thing that comes from ideas, though, is not the outcome of the idea itself—it’s the insight from the idea. Coming up with a number of ideas is simple. Discovering insight into how those ideas interconnect is less so. Finding how those insights can uncover a solution to a problem is how a product’s design is formed.
