The Sum of the Parts
Microblog #2
I’m staring out the window at the conifers that line my yard, thinking of the vast forest out beyond the cedars. It wouldn’t be a forest without the multitude of trees. But a tree, without the multitude, would still be a tree.
Aristotle is quoted as saying, “The whole is not the same as the sum of its parts.”
If we think about that in relation to a product, it’s easy to understand that a design is not the same as the sum of the things that put it together.
Design is not the same as decoration. It’s not the placement of a button, or the typography. It’s not the lines of code. It’s all of that put together, and more.
